Uterine cancers, particularly those of the cervix and endometrium, are among the leading causes of cancer-related mortality in women worldwide. Their incidence continues to rise, even affecting younger women. These diseases are characterized by aggressive growth, early metastases, and often low survival rates.<\/p>\n<p>The microbiome, which refers to all the microorganisms present in a given environment, plays a key role in human health. In the uterus, its composition varies with age, hormones, and the phases of the menstrual cycle. In healthy women, bacteria such as lactobacilli often dominate, protecting against infections and regulating immune responses. They produce substances like lactic acid, which creates an acidic environment unfavorable to pathogens. Other bacteria, such as bifidobacteria, synthesize antibacterial compounds that limit the proliferation of harmful microbes.<\/p>\n<p>However, in women with uterine cancers, the microbiome shows significant imbalances. Studies reveal a decrease in lactobacilli and an increase in potentially harmful bacteria, such as <em>Prevotella<\/em>, <em>Porphyromonas<\/em>, or <em>Atopobium<\/em>. These changes promote chronic inflammation, a known factor in tumor formation. For example, certain bacteria stimulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6 or interleukin-17, which activate signaling pathways involved in tumor growth. Others, like <em>Fusobacterium<\/em>, are associated with increased infiltration of suppressive immune cells, weakening the anti-tumor response.<\/p>\n<p>The microbiome also influences the response to treatments. Bacteria such as <em>Lactobacillus johnsonii<\/em> improve the effectiveness of immunotherapy by modulating the activity of immune cells. Conversely, some bacterial strains reduce sensitivity to chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Probiotics, particularly those based on lactobacilli, are beginning to be tested to strengthen natural defenses or enhance the effects of medications.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the uterine microbiome could serve as a biomarker for early diagnosis. The presence of certain bacteria, such as <em>Porphyromonas somerae<\/em>, is strongly correlated with an increased risk of endometrial cancer, even in asymptomatic women. Similarly, a decrease in microbial diversity or an increase in specific pathogens could indicate a less favorable prognosis.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, complex mechanisms link the microbiome to genetic mutations in tumors. Some bacteria, such as <em>Escherichia coli<\/em>, produce toxins that disrupt normal cellular processes, thereby promoting the proliferation of cancer cells. These diseases are distinguished by rapid progression, early metastases, and often low five-year survival rates.<\/p>\n<p>In a healthy uterus, the microbiome is balanced and dominated by beneficial bacteria such as lactobacilli. These microorganisms protect against infections by producing lactic acid, which acidifies the environment and prevents the proliferation of pathogens. They also regulate immune responses by stimulating the production of anti-inflammatory molecules and limiting excessive activation of natural defenses. Other bacteria, such as bifidobacteria, reinforce this protection by synthesizing antibacterial compounds capable of neutralizing various infectious agents.<\/p>\n<p>However, in women with uterine cancers, this balance is disrupted. Research shows a significant reduction in lactobacilli and an increase in potentially harmful bacteria, such as <em>Prevotella<\/em>, <em>Porphyromonas<\/em>, or <em>Atopobium<\/em>.
